19 - The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Anchor Books, 1998
311 pages
Date completed: January 1, 2010

I truly enjoyed this book. My brain went into shock at first because I don't read all that many books about dystopia. But I was sucked in right away and fell in love with Atwood's writing all over again (which first occurred 4 years ago when I read Alias Grace). Sorry in advance that this won't be the most informative of reviews-- I'm writing it nearly three months after having completed the book, so I'm a little rusty about the material.

The narrator's story is captivating, as are her circumstances in this futuristic society ruled by Commanders and the like. There were some particularly horrifying scenes and ideas, and I just really wanted to find out what happened to Offred in this world where she can't trust anyone, is completely in other people's control, and when she's getting older (and she's supposed to be reproducing).

In short: I remember loving it. Sorry that's as detailed as it gets. I'm just trying to get this blog all caught up.
